Delivering Nitric Oxide to the Brain
The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy has acquired a 4 year, $1.87 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to extend their investigation into finding a brand-new medicine that will find a cure or treatment for Alzheimer's disease.Gregory Thatcher, teacher of medical chemistry and pharmacognosy will be the grant's primary researcher. Thatcher’s previous colleagues at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, will be working with him.
A decade ago or so, they proposed that providing nitric oxide to the brain would be advantageous in combating neurodegenerative illness, considering that nitric oxide is a messenger molecule vital for acquiring skills and memory. "This concept was not very popular, due to the fact that nitric oxide is a gas and toxic at greater concentrations," But Thatcher said, “so is oxygen”.
Alzheimer's is a calamitous disease that affects 1 out of 3 individuals beyond the age of 80. The Alzheimer's Association claim it is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Presently there are no medicines to slow the rate of advancement in the illness. Thatcher said that, "new medicines to relieve symptoms would be a huge advantage to caretakers and clients".
