Nitric Oxide, More Energy, Strength & Muscle Growth
Muscle & Fitness
Nitric Oxide boosters have been one of the most popular selling supplements since they hit the market in the late 90’s. That’s because NO is a potent molecule in the body that widens blood vessels to increase blood flow to exercising muscles. With more blood flow comes the delivery of more oxygen, nutrients, and anabolic hormones. The end result is more energy and strength during the workout and more muscle growth after, as research confirms.
Nitric oxide is produced in the body when the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS) converts the amino acid arginine into nitric oxide (NO). While some guys are under the misconception that NO boosters contain nitric oxide, the reality is that since NO is a gas, that would be impossible in supplement form. NO boosters work through one of three major mechanisms, with most using all three.
The first mechanism is to provide more starting material, namely arginine. By taking more arginine you increase the amount of NO that the body produces. This is why most NO boosters include some form of arginine, or citrulline (which is readily converted to arginine in the body). Newer NO boosters may also provide nitrates, which have the chemical structure NO3-. In the body enzymes reduce nitrate to NO.
Nitric Oxide Boosters Use, Increase in Activity of NOS
The second mechanism that NO boosters use is an increase in activity of NOS. This increases the amount of arginine converted to NO in the body. Commonly used ingredients to boost NOS include pycnogenol, ginseng, GPLC (glycine propionyl-L-Carnitine), and histidine.
The third mechanism that NO boosters use is the prevention of the breakdown of NO in the body. By preventing its breakdown, you have more NO floating around for longer. Commonly used ingredients to prevent NO breakdown include horny goat weed, vitamin C, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), and cnidium monnier.
